The Causes of Low Blood Sugar

When you miss a meal your blood sugar levels are naturally going to fall by varying degrees depending on your normal diet and your state of health. When the body is expecting a meal and suddenly is deprived of the nutrients the body feels it is being starved, and goes into a state of panic. Numerous hormones are released to signal a reminder that the body is in need of calories and nutrients to keep the body functioning properly.

It is possible that the body can experience any, of an array of different low blood level symptoms such as moodiness, confusion, weakness, sweating, disorientation and vision problems. It may or may not be apparent, that lack of food is the problem, but most people begin to realise that if they tend to suffer with some of these problems and by eating a small snack, it will solve the problem. Sometimes people are not aware of the connection of this discomfort, with the lack of food and a drop in their lowering blood sugar.

There is plenty of advice about how to raise your sugar levels and taking some sugar or honey is a normal recommendation. If the symptoms are serious then you may feel that a sugar fix is a good idea. Just remember that the fix should be something to dispel the symptoms and you should then be thinking about having something more substantial in the form of a complex carbohydrate with only a medium glycaemic index rating. This will then buffer the effects of the sugar and stop your blood sugar level falling again after the small amount of sugar has been used up.

If you look at a Blood sugar levels chart for guidance, it should ideally be between 70 and 110mg/dl (milligrams per decilitre of blood). If your blood sugar levels constantly fall below this range your doctor will call this hypoglycaemia, and may be a condition that can change into diabetes and the need for medication. Usually you will have to keep a record of your blood sugar readings for a month at different times of the day.

Low blood sugar may also be a symptom of incorrect medication for someone with diabetes. If low blood sugar happens in the night or in the morning, then you may need your medication changing.

Generally, hypoglycaemia is a condition which builds up because the diet is high in foods with a high glycaemic load. These are foods which cause the blood sugar levels to rise too quickly. This is harmful to the body and insulin is produced to lower the levels, which causes an imbalance in your sugar levels. The blood sugar levels after eating will be very high then after the body produces the insulin the levels will be too low. If the diet isn’t corrected this spiking and troughing, as it is commonly called, will get worse and the symptoms will get more regular.

If this problem, of low blood sugar symptoms without diabetes, is remedied fairly quickly there will be no lasting problems and any symptoms will soon be a thing of the past. See our articles on Glycaemic index and glycaemic load. Familiarise yourself with the foods that have a high G.I and cut them out of your diet or reduce them considerably and always remember to balance them with plenty of food with a very low glycaemic index so the resultant glycaemic load is always below 59. If you start doing this with all your food your blood sugar levels will never spike and then fall too low.

It is a good idea to cut out all sugar from your diet. This in itself is normally enough to solve the problem in a relatively short time, and if your couple this with having more smaller regular meals this will never reoccur and your energy levels will stay up all through the day. After a while your body will get so efficient with keeping its sugar levels stable you will probably be able to skip the odd meal with limited or little side effects coming back.

Your body is an amazing biological machine. Look after it and it will look after you, but you need to respect it and learn how to feed it with the right food at the right time, and you will not experience any lowering blood sugar or high blood sugar symptoms.
