3 Natural Alternatives To Sugar

When we first start out trying to find healthier and more nutritious foods to include in our diet, most people look at one common denominator - sugar.

Healthcare professionals and medical advice have long touted the detrimental impact of consuming too much sugar. The impact spans from weight gain through to excessive calorie consumption and even an increased risk of diseases and heightened blood pressure.

We also have dentists telling us regularly to significantly limit sugary drinks and treats that can attack your enamel and cause plaque. Reducing sugar can be the single most impactful and beneficial thing that we do in 2020.

But, even if we decide to cut out sugar, that craving is unlikely to instantly disappear. So, are there natural alternatives to sugar that give us that satisfaction with less of the health implications? Yes - and here are three of them.

Maple Syrup

Pure maple syrup, made from the sap of sugar maples, is a natural antioxidant with up to 24 different types in its composition. Unlike refined sugars, it also has a low glycemic index which means that it is less likely to cause a sharp sugar high (or sugar crash).

The abundance of polyphenol antioxidants is known to help reduce inflammation - specifically in diseases such as arthritis or heart disease. And, seeing as it is a natural and free-from chemicals alternative, it reduces the risk of developing a leaky gut (a digestion condition where bacteria can ‘leak’ through the intestine wall).

Consider using it as an alternative to sugar in your tea or coffee. Or drizzling some across popcorn for a healthier movie-night treat.

Stevia Extracts

Known as a novel sweetener, Stevia is a plant extract made from the leaves of the stevia plant. It is considerably sweeter than normal refined sugar, meaning very little has to be used to get the same impact.

In fact, it can be anywhere between 100 to 300 times sweeter. And, it has no carbohydrates and is very low in calories. Stevia extracts can be used in cooking or blended with other sweeteners.

However, many people find that it has an aftertaste and, therefore, not the best choice for hot drinks.

Dates

These shrivelled little fruits are high in a multitude of vitamins, minerals and also have high levels of fibre. They are rich in antioxidants, thought to help support gut health and provide your body with good levels of Vitamin K to support healthy bones. When blended with water, they create date paste which can be used as a sweetener.

In this state, it has a low glycaemic index and fructose level, making it a viable natural alternative. Consider adding vanilla extract for flavour but, remember, date paste is much sweeter than normal refined sugar.
