Researchers in Japan studied 55 people of an average age of 74 over a five year period. Their findings show that those people with the lowest levels of DHA had a 1.5 more chance of having dental disease compared to those with normal levels. A Korean study of 144 women with cervical cancer, were studied against 288 women of similar age with no cervical cancer. The study compared the levels of Vitamins A, C and E, and found that the top 25% of those people with the highest amount of Vitamin E had a 47% lower risk of cervical cancer, and the top 25% of those people with the highest amount of Vitamin A and C had a 65% lower risk of cervical cancer. This supports the need for more anti-oxidants in the diet to lower the risk of cervical cancer.

High blood pressure accounts for nearly 50% of all premature death in Europe. However, a Canadian study has shown that flax seed proteins can inhibit an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme. Angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor, which means it makes blood vessels tighten and increase blood pressure. Fortunately there is an Angiotensin I which only exists as a precursor to Angiotensin II, and has no other role in the body. The angiotensin converting enzyme is involved in the change from I to II, and therefore the action of flax seed proteins in restricting this enzymes proves that it will help maintain a healthy blood pressure.

A study of over 200 pregnant women who were suspected of being at risk of developing pre-eclampsia, were given 200 mg of Co-Q-10 per day or a placebo. During the study 25.6% of those who took the placebo developed pre-eclampsia compared to only 14.4% of those taking Co-Q-10. The researchers concluded that taking 100mg twice a day of Co-Q-10 from week 20 of the pregnancy had a substantially reduced risk of having pre-eclampsia.
