constriction compounds which is associated with the signs of
cardiovascular disease. This improvement in endothelial function has
also shown to have blood pressure lowering properties.

#60 Cardiovascular Health – Essential Tips

Increase all soluble fibre in the diet which will help to lower
cholesterol levels, such as beans, fruit, vegetables, lentils and flax

When an asthmatic has any irritation in the airways, the muscles in
the walls constrict and the lining begins to swell. This causes
narrowing of the airways and breathing becomes difficult. A double blind
study of 55 asthma suffers were given daily magnesium supplements for 6
months, then they were subjected to a chemical known to cause an asthma
reaction. During the trial those taking the magnesium supplement showed
a 6% improvement in lung function, and they also required 20% more of
the chemical to bring on the asthmatic reaction. The results were
suggested to be due to magnesium’s ability to improve the properties of
the cell membranes, and its anti-inflammatory properties.

it provides a more alkaline environment in the mouth which the main
bacteria responsible for tooth decay does not like.

#84 Multivitamins – The key to a Younger Body

Scientists have tested telomeres which are parts of our DNA that
deteriorate and shrink with age. A study of over 500 women aged between

High blood pressure accounts for nearly 50% of all premature death in
Europe. However, a Canadian study has shown that flax seed proteins can
inhibit an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme. Angiotensin II
is a vasoconstrictor, which means it makes blood vessels tighten and
increase blood pressure. Fortunately there is an Angiotensin I which
only exists as a precursor to Angiotensin II, and has no other role in
the body. The angiotensin converting enzyme is involved in the change
from I to II, and therefore the action of flax seed proteins in
restricting this enzymes proves that it will help maintain a healthy
blood pressure.

.
#93 Pregnancy – Taking Folic Acid is Extremely Important

Folic acid is necessary for every process in the body requiring cell
multiplication, and so it important to supplement with folic acid just
before, and for the whole of the pregnancy. Deficiencies of folic acid
may result in birth defects particularly spina bifida, which is a defect
of an under developed nervous system. The recommendations are to take a
single 400mcg tablet per day to ensure correct foetus growth.

.
#94 Normal Tension Glaucoma – Take Ginkgo Biloba Herb to Reduce Pressure in the Eye

Glaucoma is a build-up of pressure in the eye, which can damage the
optic nerve and eventually cause blindness. NTG is a rarer form which is
possibly caused by impaired blood flow to the eye. After a scientific
study of patients with NTG and supplementation with Ginkgo it was
discovered that the Ginkgo group had improved eye test results compared
prior to the eight week trial.

.
#95 Coeliacs – Poor Nutrient Absorption Requires Vitamin Supplementation

Coeliac disease affects about 1% of the population. This allergic
reaction to the protein found in certain grains called gluten, causes
damage to the lining of the gut, this results in a difficulty to absorb
certain nutrients, particularly B complex vitamins like B6, B12 and
folic acid. This causes a deficiency in these nutrients which can lead
to heart disease and other health issues. Studies of coeliac sufferers
supplementing with B complex vitamins have shown that their levels of
these important vitamins were back to normal compared to those not
taking extra supplementation.

.
#96 Pre-eclampsia – Co-Q-10 May Cut Out the Risk

This condition affects about 2% of all pregnancies world-wide and can
be quite a worry for some newly pregnant mothers. A study of over 200
pregnant women who were suspected of being at risk of developing
pre-eclampsia, were given 200 mg of Co-Q-10 per day or a placebo. During
the study 25.6% of those who took the placebo developed pre-eclampsia
compared to only 14.4% of those taking Co-Q-10. The researchers
concluded that taking 100mg twice a day of Co-Q-10 from week 20 of the
pregnancy had a substantially reduced risk of having pre-eclampsia.

#97 Asthma in Children – Nutrients That Can Help

An Egyptian study of 60 children showed that by supplementing with
1000mg of omega-3, 15mg of zinc and 200mg of Vitamin C, either on their
own or together had positive improvements on these children’s asthma.
