Food Allergies, Testing and How to be Healthy

If you have some food allergies and think you are unlucky, let me try and change your perspective of the situation. I can understand how it is easy to presume that this problem is a curse rather than a blessing, and you probably feel that you would “like to be the same as everyone else”, and be able to eat everything, whenever you like.

If your allergy is a very serious one and could cause death or even hospital treatment I am sorry for you predicament, otherwise I feel that the allergic response you get is a correct sign from your body that you should not eat this food. Your body has found a way of letting you know when you have eaten a food which doesn’t mix with the body’s bio-chemistry.

A large proportion of the population are eating foods in their diet which are, to some degree, adding toxins to their system that they are unaware of. The toxicity builds up in their body; they begin to gain weight and become ill and eventually the body begins to deteriorate and brake down.

Your allergic reactions alert you to a threat to your body. Your body is working correctly, and you will hopefully stop eating the food which will harm it. You might think this is not true, but there is a scientific reason why certain foods should be avoided by everyone. The health of the people who eat these foods is being affected, but they are unaware of the damage being done.

There are various ways in which these foods disrupt your body in some way, and it may be only minor if only eaten occasionally. However, because people do not know of any bad biological interactions when they consume these foods, their continued consumption will build up problems over their lifetime. Read our article called “An Introduction to The Blood Type Diet” for more in depth information on this subject.

If you have a food allergy which causes a physical symptom instead of a sensitivity, such as irritable bowel syndrome, mood swings, weight problems, muscle soreness, sleep disturbances, fatigue, rashes and depression, these are obviously more serious allergies and it is helpful to know what the food is so that you can remove them totally from your diet.

You have likely considered being tested for food allergies with one of the many tests available around the country. If you have had a test done and have been successful in determining the food or foods that you are allergic to, I am very pleased for you. You did well. Unfortunately I have to give you all the bad news. None of the allergy tests available are 100% conclusive. Not even the cyto-toxic blood test.

Many years back the Natural Health Foundation sent out a team of people with known food allergies, to different clinics around the country offering these allergy tests. Each person was tested by two different clinics offering the same allergy test. All the known allergy tests were covered. Unfortunately, not one of the allergy suffers who were helping the foundation with their survey was given the same report by both of the allergy testers. This proved that the tests were only as good as the person performing them. It didn’t mean that the tests themselves were flawed, but that they required some expertise from the operator. Therefore, a single food allergy test from any of these allergy test clinics was not to be trusted or relied upon. The results can be accurate but there are possible errors which could come from the operator’s ability to evaluate the data.

The tests may give you a good idea of what the food is, and may give you an idea of what group of foods are causing the problems.

My best advice to you, considering the findings of the tests from the Foundation, is to save your money. The tests can be quite costly and you can do your own allergy testing; it is relatively simple.

There is only one full-proof method of testing for food allergies. It is time consuming but conclusive. You need to keep a record of what you are eating. Ideally, I suggest that you abstain from all suspect foods for about two weeks, and although it takes six weeks to totally remove a food from your blood stream, in two weeks the majority of the residues will be gone.

Take a teaspoonful of one of the foods which you suspect are the likely allergen and lightly chew it. Keep the food in the mouth for a few minutes. Watch for any reactions, as listed previously in the article. Wait thirty minutes and if no reactions are noticed, eat a small portion of that food, then wait for three days to see if you have a reaction. During this time do not eat this food again or eat any other suspect food! If after the three days you have not experienced any adverse effects, you can rule out this food from your suspect list, and put it back in your diet. Carry on and repeat this procedure for all other suspected foods.

If you would like to do your own test, and try and sort out any foods that you may be allergic to, but don’t know where to start, begin with all dairy items and grains like wheat, rye and corn. All these are very common allergic foods. This is partly due to the intensive farming methods that are used when growing the grains and the amount of antibiotics and hormones that the cows are injected with.

Yeast allergy is another big problem for people due to the imbalance of good and bad flora in our intestines. This is caused by doctors over prescribing drugs for any ailment that comes along. Antibiotics are not discriminative in what bacteria they destroy, and will attempt to kill good bacteria as well as bad. Read our article called “Probiotics – Their Role in Good Digestion and the Immune System”.

A final note regarding more serious allergies; get medical advice from your doctor before doing this test, and even then proceed with caution when doing the three minute mouth test, and also use a smaller amount. Even a few grains are sufficient to do the test.

A good basic list of usual allergic foods are wheat, rye, corn, dairy products, nuts, peanuts, pork, coconut and shellfish. As you can see from this list these are common foods, yet many of us are allergic to them to some extent, as allergies come in various degrees. Some people’s bodies are so full of toxins, that a few more can generally go unnoticed. So find out what foods can cause adverse reactions in your body, eradicate them from your diet and have a far healthier life.

You can also try taking digestive enzymes before your meals, for a lot of people this certainly has a good response. Suffers with food allergies are likely to be lacking the digestive enzyme hydrochloric acid and pancreatin. The extra enzymes may help to reduce the absorption of proteins that are undigested. This can be a trigger for an allergic response.

Another supplement that is very beneficial for digestion is L-glutamine. It will enhance the immune functions of the gut and will help to heal in the intestines.
